CREATING CONDITIONS FOR REO MĀORI GROWTH

CREATING CONDITIONS FOR REO MĀORI GROWTH ✦

COURSE OVERVIEW

Kia Puawaitia te reo is a six-week course designed for adult Māori language learners who already have some knowledge of te reo but struggle to use it confidently or consistently in everyday contexts. This course addresses some of the psychological, emotional, and relational barriers that often prevent learners from using the reo they already know.

Many Māori learners experience language related anxiety, whakamā, fear of judgement, or pressure to “perform” when speaking te reo. When we experience anxiety, it can prevent us from engaging in kaupapa or places with people who might enrich our lives. Our experiences of whakamā are often shaped by our histories, and broader colonial impacts on language use. Kia Puawaitia te reo supports learners to recognise these patterns and intentionally create conditions that support sustainable reo use across different parts of their lives. Learning to learn, and manage our emotions that are related to te reo can allow significant changes in our lives and the lives of our uri whakaheke.

This course is informed by kaupapa Māori research-informed practice, my own experiences as a teacher for over 15 years, and someone who understands the reo Māori reclamation process. Through the course, you’ll be supported to move away from overthinking and self-criticism, which prevents us from experiencing the pleasures of reo Māori use. The tools shared through this course are designed to give you clarity, confidence, and practical strategies for everyday reo Māori use.
